The Original Cast of 1675
Director’s Note:
This musical follows the characters James and Sarah during King Philip’s War, Massachusetts, 1675. The two once lived in the Praying Town of Natick, established by John Eliot. After the Burning of Springfield, the General Court orders the removal of all Praying Indians to Deer Island, off the coast of Boston. James attempts to escape the arrival of the soldiers with Sarah, but fails and runs away alone. He is met by Weetamoo, a Native military leader, and joins her army. Sarah and the rest of the town are shipped to the island wherein several deaths occur over a span of 9 months- including the death of her parents. The play revolves around James attempting to find a way to save Sarah from the Island, and Sarah attempting to survive the island. Battles are fought between Weetamoo’s army and the colonists, but the final battle leaves James alone on stage with Weetamoo. Weetamoo informs him that the war has been lost, and that King Phillip was betrayed and killed. She urges James to find a new way to find Sarah, as that is his mission. He goes to find John Eliot and Daniel Gookin who work to retrieve the remaining people from Deer Island. Sarah is brought back with the survivors, but is not in good condition. She speaks to James at the end of the play, telling him that he needs to tell the story of what happened to the people on Deer Island. Sarah dies, and James is told of the death of Weetamoo. He decides that he will do his best to tell the story.
1675. Massachusetts.
This play is a message to a white audience to give perspective on a piece of history that they may have not paid any attention to. The piece is meant to grab their attention and allow them to follow it without needing to know all of the background information. The hope is that the audience will find an attachment to the characters in the play and feel connected and angry about the events that happen in the play (knowing that the play is based on a real event) by the end.
